U.s. paralympics integrated adaptive sports program

It shows me that participation in adaptive sports is about more than gaining confidence, self-esteem or making it to elite level competition.

That is why I recently hired Mrs. Susan Pejoro, R. Her initial focus will be to blend clinical care initiatives throughout VA and progressive rehabilitation concepts to our current adaptive sporting events. The goal is to ensure that all VA medical providers, from the smallest VA clinic to the largest VA medical center, have the resources and ability to clinically assess and refer Veterans to appropriate adaptive sporting events.

And to measure the results of adaptive sports participation through areas such as weight management, smoking cessation, hypertension, blood pressure, or reduced dependency on medication. We will develop an adaptive sports electronic referral process to expedite event applications, medical clearance, and encourage post event incorporation of adaptive sporting activities for a lifetime of health.

We will be reaching out to our interdisciplinary peers to review current research on the state of clinical benefits of adaptive sorts. We will also retrospectively look at the data we have collected over the last 25 years with our adaptive sports clinics. Our goals are to harness the therapeutic value of adaptive sports by measuring clinical outcomes, supporting VA clinical teams and local adaptive sport programs, and encouraging Veterans to stay active in their communities.

They are learning to redefine their lives and their future potential. But it also resonates within VA as we redefine our approach to health care from treating symptoms to promoting healthy living and avoiding illness altogether.

Matching requirements are not applicable to this program. Maintenance of Effort MOE requirements are not applicable to this program. Evidence-based Programs or Practices VA considers programs and practices to be evidence-based when their effectiveness has been demonstrated by causal evidence generally obtained through one or more outcome evaluations. Causal evidence documents a relationship between an activity or intervention including technology and its intended outcome, including measuring the direction and size of a change, and the extent to which a change may be attributed to the activity or intervention.

Causal evidence depends on the use of scientific methods to rule out, to the extent possible, alternative explanations for the documented change. The strength of causal evidence, based on the factors described above, will influence the degree to which VA considers a program or practice to be evidence-based. Organizations must have significant experience in supporting disabled athletes, including the promotion of disabled sports at local and national levels. The grant program provides funding to private non-profit organizations that support the goal of increasing the participation of disabled Veterans and disabled members of the Armed Forces in sports.

The grantees are responsible for planning, developing, managing and implementing an integrated adaptive sports program for disabled Veterans and disabled members of the Armed Forces. This includes instruction, participation, and competition in adaptive sports; training and technical assistance to program administrators, coaches, recreational therapists, instructors, and other appropriate individuals; and coordination of athletes. It also includes athlete assessments, sport-specific training techniques, program development, and other activities related to the implementation and operation of the program.

Limitations on the use of administrative expenses are described in 38 U.
